Description
IronOut Pro is a specialist poultice formulated to remove deep-seated rust and other metallic stains from masonry and stone surfaces. It is highly effective for use on driveways, walkways, patios, and
commercial floors and can be applied to brick, concrete, tile, and most natural stone. The poultice works by penetrating the surface and drawing rust and metallic deposits out of the material and into the paste.
Once dried, the poultice is removed, taking the stains with it and leaving the surface clean and restored. Its thick, creamy consistency allows for precise application, making it ideal for use even
in intricate areas such as around ornamental wrought iron or decorative stonework.
Advantages and Limitations:
IronOut Pro has been developed to provide professional-grade results on a variety of surfaces. Its deep-penetrating formula makes it suitable for removing stains that have soaked into porous masonry and stone, restoring the natural appearance of the material.
The product’s creamy texture makes it easy to control during application, particularly in areas where accuracy is required. While IronOut Pro is versatile and highly effective, there are some conditions where its performance may be limited. The product should not be applied when temperatures are outside the recommended range of 10°C to 29°C. Cold weather will slow down the reaction and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment, while very hot conditions or direct sunlight may cause the poultice to dry too quickly.
The product is not suitable for use on surfaces where the colour has been created or enhanced using metallic pigments, as the treatment could alter the appearance of the surface. For this reason, and to ensure the best possible results, it is always essential to carry out a pretest before starting work on a large or visible area.
Preparation:
Proper preparation is vital to ensure a safe and effective cleaning process. Begin by assessing the area around the stains and identifying any surfaces that need protection. Nearby plants, glass, painted finishes, or decorative features should be covered with heavy-duty plastic sheeting or tarpaulins. These coverings must be securely fixed in place to prevent them from moving during the application process, especially when working outdoors where wind drift could cause the poultice to spread unintentionally.
Check that both the surface and air temperatures are within the recommended range of 10°C to 29°C. Avoid applying IronOut Pro during periods of strong sunlight, high winds, or when rain is expected, as these factors can compromise the performance of the product.
Before handling IronOut Pro, ensure that you are wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. This includes chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles or a face shield, and suitable protective
clothing to prevent accidental splashes from reaching the skin. If you are working in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area, you may also need to wear a respirator to prevent inhalation of any airborne particles.
If the treatment is being carried out in a public space or high-traffic area, measures should be taken to secure the site. Use warning signs, cones, or temporary barriers to prevent pedestrians and
pets from coming into contact with the poultice while it is wet or drying.
Finally, gather all necessary tools before you begin. You will need a trowel or taping knife to apply the poultice, a low-pressure water sprayer or hose for rinsing, and a non-ferrous or nylon-bristled brush to help remove any remaining residues without damaging the masonry. Heated water may be used during rinsing to improve cleaning efficiency.
Pretesting:
Pretesting is an essential step and should never be skipped. It allows you to confirm that IronOut Pro is suitable for the surface and the type of stain you are dealing with. It also helps to determine how long the product should remain in place and whether multiple treatments will be required. Select a small, inconspicuous area for the test.
Apply IronOut Pro to this area using the same method you plan to use for the full application, spreading it evenly at a thickness of approximately 4 mm. Allow the poultice to dwell and dry under similar environmental conditions to those expected during the main cleaning process.
Once the poultice has dried completely, carefully remove it and rinse the area thoroughly with fresh water. Allow the surface to dry fully before inspecting the results. Based on this test, you can decide on the correct dwell time, determine whether a single treatment will be sufficient, and make any necessary adjustments to your approach.
Application Process:
After completing all preparation and pretesting, you are ready to apply IronOut Pro to the stained area. Begin by using a clean trowel or taping knife to spread a generous, even layer of poultice over the stained surface. The layer should be approximately 4 mm thick to ensure the product penetrates deeply and effectively draws out the rust. For highly porous surfaces, it may be beneficial to cover the applied poultice with a thin sheet of polyethylene film or another moisture-resistant material. Gently press the film against the surface so that it clings to the paste, then seal the edges with tape. This will help to maintain moisture levels, preventing premature drying and allowing the product to work more thoroughly.
Leave the poultice undisturbed for a period of 8 to 10 hours, or until it has completely dried. During this time, the area should remain secure and free from interference. Once the poultice has dried fully, carefully lift it away using a trowel or taping knife, taking care not to damage the masonry. After the dried material has been removed, rinse the treated surface thoroughly using clean water and low-pressure rinsing equipment. For any areas where residues remain, gently scrub with a non-ferrous or nylon-bristled brush.
Avoid using steel or wire brushes, as these can scratch the surface and leave behind metal particles that could cause further staining. After rinsing, allow the surface to dry completely before carrying out a final inspection. If traces of rust remain, repeat the process as necessary. In cases of severe or long-standing staining, more than one application may be required to fully restore the surface.
Cleanup and Storage:
When the cleaning process is complete, thoroughly clean all tools and equipment using clean water. This includes trowels, knives, brushes, and sprayers. Immediate cleaning will help keep your equipment in good condition and ready for future use.
Used poultice material should be collected and disposed of responsibly in accordance with local waste regulations. Do not flush large amounts of the product into drains or natural water sources, as this can cause environmental harm.
Store IronOut Pro in its original sealed container in a cool, dry location. Keep it away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and freezing temperatures. Proper storage will maintain the product’s
effectiveness and ensure it remains safe for use.
Coverage Rates:
The amount of IronOut Pro required will vary depending on the porosity and texture of the surface and the extent of staining. As a general guideline, one kilogram of product will treat approximately 0.2 to 0.3 square metres. Surfaces that are highly porous or heavily stained may require additional product. It is advisable to keep extra material available to ensure uninterrupted progress on larger projects.
Packaging:
IronOut Pro is available in two container sizes. The 1 kg container is ideal for small, localised treatments, while the 3 kg container is better suited to larger areas or widespread staining. Both are
supplied in durable plastic packaging designed to keep the product fresh and secure during storage.
