Description
CopperOut Pro is a specialist poultice designed to remove deep-set copper oxide staining from masonry surfaces. These distinctive blue-green stains are commonly caused by water runoff from copper roofing, gutters, flashing, or decorative architectural elements. Over time, the copper runoff penetrates deeply into the stonework, leaving permanent discoloration that standard surface cleaners cannot remove. Unlike conventional cleaning products, CopperOut Pro works by drawing out and dissolving copper-based contamination from within the pores of the masonry. When applied, the poultice penetrates the stone, breaking down and lifting embedded stains to the surface.
After a controlled dwell period, the partially dried poultice can be carefully removed, taking the dissolved contaminants with it. This method ensures a thorough, effective clean while protecting the
underlying structure of the masonry. The paste-like consistency of CopperOut Pro allows it to remain in place during treatment, even on vertical or detailed surfaces, while also minimising runoff and reducing the risk of environmental contamination.
This makes it particularly suitable for both historic and modern buildings where maintaining the integrity of the stonework is essential. When used correctly, CopperOut Pro provides a safe, controlled, and highly effective stain removal process that restores masonry to its natural appearance without causing surface damage or discolouration.
Advantages and Limitations:
CopperOut Pro offers several important advantages. Its thick poultice formulation adheres well to vertical surfaces and intricate architectural features, ensuring consistent contact with the stained area. This allows for deep penetration, even into stubborn stains that have developed over many years, and helps achieve uniform cleaning results. By holding dissolved contaminants within the dried material, the process significantly reduces the amount of runoff and liquid waste, making disposal easier and minimising environmental impact.
Because the product is specifically designed for the removal of copper oxide staining, it delivers a level of effectiveness that general-purpose masonry cleaners cannot match. It is especially valuable in restoration projects where preserving the appearance and integrity of historic stonework is a priority. However, there are some key limitations.
CopperOut Pro is not a universal cleaner and should not be relied upon for other types of staining or general masonry soiling.
In cases of severe or deeply embedded stains, multiple applications may be required to achieve complete removal. As with any professional-grade restoration treatment, a small test area must always be carried out before full-scale application to confirm suitability for the specific masonry type and to establish the correct dwell time and technique.
Care must also be taken during use to prevent waste material from entering drains, soil, or natural water systems.
Preparation:
Proper preparation is essential for achieving the best results when using CopperOut Pro. Taking the time to set up the work area correctly will not only make the job easier and more efficient but will also help protect the surrounding environment and ensure safety for everyone involved. Begin by carefully inspecting the area around the stained masonry. Any nearby surfaces that could be affected by the poultice or by splashing during the rinsing process must be protected. This includes landscaping such as plants or grass, painted surfaces, glass, wooden fixtures, and any decorative or delicate features adjacent to the treatment zone. Cover these surfaces with heavy-duty plastic sheeting or durable tarps and secure them tightly so they remain in place throughout the entire process.
Environmental factors should also be considered. Avoid applying CopperOut Pro on windy days, as gusts can blow the product across unwanted areas, causing mess or waste. Similarly, if rain is
expected, postpone the job until conditions are dry. Rainfall will not only wash away the poultice but may also dilute its strength before it has time to work effectively. The ideal conditions for application are mild temperatures with minimal wind and no immediate risk of precipitation.
Before handling CopperOut Pro, make safety your top priority. Always wear the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect against accidental splashes or skin contact. This includes chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles or a full-face shield, and suitable protective clothing such as overalls or a long-sleeved shirt and trousers.
In confined spaces or areas with poor airflow, respiratory protection may also be necessary to prevent inhalation of fumes or airborne particles.
Next, secure the area around the worksite to prevent disturbances during the process. If you are working in a public or shared space, use warning signs, cones, or temporary barriers to block access. It is critical to keep pedestrians, pets, and unauthorized personnel away from the treated surface, especially while the poultice is wet or drying.
Finally, gather all the equipment and materials you will need for the task. The essential tools include a trowel for applying the poultice, a low-pressure water sprayer or hose for rinsing, and a non-ferrous or nylon-bristled brush for gently removing stubborn residue. Heated water may be useful during the rinsing stage to improve efficiency.
Taking these preparation steps ensures that both the masonry and the surrounding environment are well protected and sets the stage for a smooth, professional cleaning process.
Application Process:
Once the work area has been properly prepared and all safety measures are in place, you can begin applying CopperOut Pro. Following this process carefully will ensure that stains are effectively drawn out and that the masonry surface is restored to its best possible condition.
To start, use a clean plasterer’s trowel to apply a generous layer of CopperOut Pro directly to the stained masonry. The poultice should be spread evenly and should be approximately six millimetres, or a quarter of an inch, thick. This thickness allows the product to fully penetrate the surface and extract the dissolved copper oxide from within the masonry. Once the poultice is applied, it must be left undisturbed.
In most situations, the product should be left for eight to ten hours or until completely dry. The exact dwell time may vary depending on the severity of the stain, the porosity of the masonry, and environmental conditions. During this time, do not allow anyone to touch or interfere with the treated area.
After the poultice has dried, carefully remove it from the surface using a trowel or taping knife. When all the dried material has been removed, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean, fresh water. A low-pressure water sprayer is ideal for this step. If any residue remains, use a non-ferrous or nylon-bristled brush to gently scrub the surface. Never use wire or steel brushes, as these can damage the masonry.
Finally, allow the surface to dry completely before inspecting. If any staining remains, repeat the process as necessary. Some severe
stains may require multiple treatments to fully restore the surface.
Pretesting:
Before applying CopperOut Pro to the entire surface, it is essential to conduct a test application. This ensures compatibility with the masonry and helps determine the most effective method. Choose a discreet area of the surface, such as a hidden corner or behind a feature wall.
Apply CopperOut Pro as you would for the full job, maintaining the same thickness and technique. Allow it to dwell under similar environmental conditions, then remove and rinse the test area. Let the area dry completely before inspecting. Based on the results, you can determine the correct dwell time, whether multiple treatments will be needed, and any adjustments to your method.
Safety Guidelines:
CopperOut Pro is a professional-grade product and must be handled with care. Always wear PPE, including chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles or a face shield, and protective clothing. In poorly ventilated areas, a respirator may be required.
If CopperOut Pro comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with clean water. In the case of eye contact, flush continuously for at least fifteen minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists. If ingested, do not induce vomiting; seek medical assistance immediately.
Keep bystanders, pets, and unauthorized personnel away from the work area using barriers, cones, or warning signs. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use for complete handling and first aid information.
Coverage and Packaging:
The amount of CopperOut Pro needed depends on the type of masonry, surface texture, and severity ofstaining. As a general guide, one kilogram will cover approximately 0.2 to 0.3 square metres. Highlyporous or heavily stained surfaces may require more product.
CopperOut Pro is available in two container sizes: – 1 kg container – ideal for small spot treatments or minor staining. – 3 kg container – best for larger projects or extensive staining. Having extra product on hand is recommended for large jobs to ensure complete coverage without interruptions.
